Automation Helps Reed Switch Developments Increase Capacity and Drive Sales Growth

Reed Switch Developments Corp., based in Racine, Wisconsin, designs and manufactures magnetic reed switches and proximity sensor assemblies for a wide range of applications. Founded in 1967 and 100% woman-owned, Reed Switch is known for its expertise in custom, high-mix, low-volume production and serves customers globally.

Situation

Reed Switch was experiencing record sales growth while facing a skilled labor shortage. The company needed a way to increase production capacity without adding headcount. At the same time, Reed Switch had begun developing in-house automation solutions, including a prototype Auto-Potting system. However, the complexity of its custom, high-mix production environment made it difficult to move from prototype to a scalable, production-ready solution. Reed Switch needed a practical way to advance automation while maintaining flexibility and supporting its existing workforce.

Solutions

Reed Switch partnered with WMEP to refine and implement its automation approach. WMEP worked side by side with the team to optimize and transition the Auto-Potting system from prototype to production-ready equipment. This included support in programming, mechanical design, machining, and system integration, along with project management to keep the effort on track. Beyond the initial project, WMEP helped Reed Switch think more broadly about automation—supporting the development of a long-term, facility-wide vision for scaling automation across the shop floor.
